Personal
Assistance
A Personal Assistant (PA) is
someone who provides a person with a disability with the
physical assistance to do things that they may not be able
to do themselves. PA is the cornerstone of the Independent
Living movement. 'Personal' means that the PA works to the
agenda of the person with a disability. 'Assistance' refers
to the method of working: a PA's role is to assist. A PA
enables a person with a disability to make their own
decisions and to be in control of their own life.
Key Benefits of Personal
Assistance:
 |
It enables people with a
physical/sensory disability to live their lives, as they
would wish rather than being totally limited by their
disability and society. |
 |
It is delivered so as to
meet consumer needs and is tailored to each clients needs.
People with disabilities are enabled to take up education,
training and work opportunities.
|
 |
The service is also of huge
benefit to the family of the client. Freeing them to take
up opportunities previously denied because of their
commitment to the client. |
 |
The service provides
full and part-time jobs. |
 |
People with disabilities can
become fully involved and active in their communities.
Bringing their knowledge, skills, and experience to bare
on activities and plans. |
The service
is
a key element in ensuring that the current trend towards
“Mainstreaming” of services is successful.
